Get to Know More About Massage Therapy!

Every specific movement and technique produces physiological alterations which fundamentally depend on two mechanisms:

1) Mechanic - for direct action

2) Neuroreflex - for indirect action

The different massage therapies

Therapeutic Massage

In every occasion in which is possible to re-stabilize, either completely or just partially, the function of one or more tissues, using specific techniques, it is possible to talk about massage therapy.

Sport Massage

One of the most exceptional ways of prevention from injury in athletic environments is presented by massage therapy. Throughout the phase of preparation, where the musculature is prepared with stretching and vasodilatory techniques, and throughout the recovery phase after the agonistic efforts, where, with draining, relaxing, and fatigue-relieving manual techniques, the aim is to quickly restore the musculature to its normal physiological levels.

Hygienic Massage

A massage is defined hygienic if it has the purpose of improving health conditions of a generally healthy person, increasing its elasticity of muscles and tendons, improving peripheral circulation, accelerating tissue-level metabolic exchanges, improving venial and lymphatic efflux, recovering the psychophysical equilibrium.

Esthetic Massage

The treatment of all skin and subcutaneous imperfections, which can benefit from treatment, as well as slowing the natural aging process of the skin, or scars.

Myofascial

It is a manipulative technique aimed at alleviating muscular aches and increase joint mobility, giving a sensation of ease of movement and equilibrium throughout the body.

Accidents, stress, traumas, overloading, and incorrect posture are cause of fascial contractions. Myofascial massage increases the circulation of blood, improves venal and lymphatic efflux, gives fluidity to the tissues with consequent alleviation of the sensation of rigidity and joint pain.

deep tissue
Connective

Aims to stimulate the connective system, which is responsible for the connection, support, and nourishment of tissues and various organs.

This massage technique interacts with the deep layers of tissues where toxins accumulate as a result of constant pressure and stress. Its purpose is to stimulate local circulation, bringing more oxygen to the treated area.

Circulatory

Circulatory massage is practiced to stimulate and assist the circulatory system. It helps with the cellular life cycle and the oxygenation process of organs by eliminating accumulated waste. It allows to regenerate and increase the blood circulation. It generally consists of four distinct phases:

  • Effleurage - gentile strokes that support blood circulation

  • Frictions - stronger manipulations that aid tissues eliminate toxins and improve circulation

  • Kneading - working of the muscles to relax them and release any minor contraptions

  • Percussion - gentile taps that promote skin tone and vasodilation

Decontracting

It consists of pure pressure maneuvers and deep manipulation, releasing tensions and contractions by working on the muscle fibers.

Because of possible exertion, trauma, altered/incorrect posture, or as a reflex to a painful stimulus, a muscle tenses its fibers. Some of these fibers may not return to a resting state on their own, and tend to remain into a constant "shortened phase", known as a contraction, which is responsible for painful sensations and increased tension. In such cases, decontraction massage, mechanically relaxes the contracted muscle fibers, and, by raising the pain threshold, prevents the muscle from returning to a tense state once the treatment is complete.

Deep Transverse

It causes a temporary analgesia, consisting of moving the inside of the affected structure to avoid formation of adherences, or to destroy already existing ones.

Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is used to address edema and as prevention, as well as to combat cellulite and water retention. Through specific techniques, it helps restore or accelerate the circulation of lymph, encouraging its flow through the lymphatic system. By stimulating lymphatic vessels and nodes, this technique promotes the removal of toxins, waste products, excess fluids, and cellular debris from the body. It is considered a valuable source of health, as it contains lymphocytes, which are responsible for antibody production and defending the body against viruses, bacteria, and infections.

The key to this technique lies in the rhythmic movements of the hands. Through gentile touches, pressure, and circular motions, the therapist modifies the pressure on the tissue, allowing improved lymph circulation.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

Gentile manual massage technique that targets specific muscle tensions. It is often referred to as "trigger point massage" as it focusses on the trigger points or myofascial areas, which are the sensitive points within the muscle tissue surrounded by connective tissue called fascia.

A nearly static pressure is applied to these soft points in the tissue to stimulate the skeletal muscles. Trigger points are energetically reactive nodes or areas of extreme irritability within a tense band of muscle tissue.

When pressure is applied, they can cause discomfort or pain. They can be found throughout the body, yet trigger point massage often focusses on the spine, from the head to the sacroiliac area, extending almost to the gluteal region.

Practitioners of such massage therapy aim to rebalance the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, aligning it with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system.

Kinesitherapy

It means "movement therapy", is a manipulative therapy aimed at functional rehabilitation.

It is generally divided into two types:

  • Active - the patient performs therapeutic exercises themselves

  • Passive - the patient undergoes passive manipulations and treatments performed by the professional therapist

Active and passive kinesitherapy complement each other along with various techniques and tools, with the ultimate goal of achieving complete functional recovery of the affected structure.

It is widely used in the field of physiotherapy and is applied in cases where there are limitations in movement and flexibility, as well as imbalances in the musculoskeletal structures.

It is particularly beneficial in traumatic events such as fractures, dislocations, ligamentous and muscular injuries, and it is commonly used after surgical interventions such as hip replacements and shoulder ligament and capsule reconstructions. It is also employed in the treatment of rheumatic conditions and nervous system disorders.

Regen Methodology is designed as an adjunctive treatment for chronic neuromuscular and joint pain. Based on the characteristics of the condition, the Regen method utilizes specific and sequential manual and mechanophysical techniques to positively impact both the circulatory and lymphatic systems, cellular energy recharge, and the transmission of electrical nerve signals to the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Each treatment performed with the Regen method involves a consultation and analysis phase to determine the appropriate treatment protocol, which consists of four phases:

  • Action on cellular fluids

  • Stimulation of muscular and tissue energy mechanisms

  • Enhancement of nerve electrical conductivity

  • Action on lymphatic drainage processes
